# How we connect your domain

> We put your website on your own domain for you. Here's the little we need, what we handle, and the technical details for whoever manages your domain.

You don't have to touch any settings. We connect your domain, set up the secure connection (the padlock in the address bar), and test everything before your new site goes live.

## What we need from you

1. **The domain you want to use**, like `yourname.com`, on either plan. Don't have one yet? Tell us the name you'd like and we'll help you get it, or your site can use an address of ours, like `yourname.brokerandagent.com`.
2. **Where it's registered**, like GoDaddy, Namecheap or Squarespace, and who looks after it: you, your brokerage or someone else.

That's it. If someone else manages your domain, we'll send them exactly what to do. If it's you, we'll walk you through it in a few minutes.

## What we take care of

- Pointing your domain at your new site, and the secure connection that comes with it.
- Moving you over from your old website, if you have one. We match your old pages to the new ones so saved links and search results keep working.
- Checking every page, form and listing search before we switch anything over.

## What you'll notice

Your new site appears at your domain, and that's all. **Your email keeps working.** If your DNS stays where it is, we only add the records the website needs, so the ones that deliver your mail stay as they are. If your nameservers move to us, we recreate your mail records on our side. Keep your old website's hosting for about 30 days after launch, just in case.

## For whoever manages your domain

There are two ways to connect it. Our team sets up either one by hand, and we'll say which suits your setup.

### Option 1: point the nameservers to us

Change the domain's nameservers at the registrar to the ones we send you. We then manage the DNS records from our side. This is the simplest option when nothing else runs on the domain.

Moving the nameservers moves every record, your mail records included, so they have to be recreated on our side. We copy them over for you.

### Option 2: keep DNS where it is

Keep DNS at the registrar and add three records. We send the exact values.

| Type | Name | Points to |
|---|---|---|
| CNAME | `www` | `customers.brokerandagent.com` |
| TXT | `_cf-custom-hostname.www` | the verification value we send |
| CNAME | `_acme-challenge.www` | the certificate value we send |

Then use your registrar's domain forwarding to send the bare domain (`yourname.com`) to `www.yourname.com` as a permanent (301) redirect.

> [!WARNING]
> Keep the TXT and `_acme-challenge` records after launch. They're how the security certificate renews. If they're deleted, visitors start seeing security warnings.
