If your CRM or texting app sends texts from a local number, those messages travel as A2P 10DLC. Registration is what keeps them
What does A2P 10DLC mean?
A2P stands for application-to-person: messages sent through software rather than typed on a personal phone. 10DLC stands for 10-digit long code, an ordinary local phone number. Together, they name the system U.S. carriers built for business texting from regular numbers, whether it’s a quick reply to a new lead or a step in a drip campaign.
The goal is to cut spam. Carriers want to know who is sending each message and what kind of messages they are, so wanted traffic gets through and the rest
How does 10DLC registration work?
There are two parts. First you register a brand: the business or person sending, with details carriers can verify. Then you register a campaign: what you’ll send, such as replies to inquiries or marketing, with sample messages and a description of how people opt in
Registration runs through The Campaign Registry, the hub the carriers use, but brands don’t sign up there directly. Your texting provider, often built into your CRM, submits it for you. Providers offer smaller tiers too, including a sole proprietor option that covers
Campaigns are reviewed before they’re approved, which can take days or weeks, so register before you
What happens if you don’t register?
Texts from unregistered 10-digit numbers to U.S. phones are blocked or filtered before they arrive. Some providers have blocked all unregistered 10DLC traffic to U.S. numbers since 2023, and carriers can add penalties for messages that
Registration doesn’t guarantee delivery. Carriers still filter messages that look like spam, so what you send, who agreed to get it and how you handle opt-outs
How does 10DLC relate to TCPA consent?
They’re separate rules that point the same way. 10DLC is a carrier requirement about who you are and what you send. The TCPA is federal law about whether you have permission to send it. Your campaign registration describes how people opt in, so your website forms need to ask for that consent
Honor STOP right away, keep your messages close to what you registered, and keep a record of when and how each person agreed. Email has its own rules under the CAN-SPAM Act.
Common mistakes
- Texting leads from a CRM number before the
campaign is approved. - Registering one kind of message
and sending another. - Collecting phone numbers on forms without a
texting consent line. - Assuming an approved campaign means you can text anyone. Consent
is still required.
