Who runs the closing

Residential closings and title examinations in Maine are commonly handled by attorneys, and many title agents are law firms. It is customary rather than required.

Property taxes and escrow

Maine property tax is set by each town. Ownership status is fixed each April 1, and towns set their own fiscal years and due dates; many run July to June. Unless the parties agree otherwise, taxes are prorated over the town’s fiscal year, so whether the seller has prepaid depends on the town.
